Met and
Southern District IOM "Team" Championship
Three Rivers RYC, 6th April, 2008
Previous experience has shown that weather forecasting can be an unreliable science but, unfortunately, for Sunday 6th April it was spot on - snow showers to mid-day and an icy wind from the north west. Nevertheless, by 9.45am two teams from Hampton Court (HC) and two from Three Rivers (TR) were huddled inside the race control tent to be welcomed by TR Commodore John Carter and OOD John Male.
The first race between TR(A) and HC(A) was keenly sailed with Colin Trower (Topiko) and Dennis Moss (Isis) showing great pace to take 1st and 2nd places respectively and a win for HC(A). This was particularly impressive since HC(A) were handicapped by being one team member short and having to borrow a skipper from one of the teams not sailing.
Race 4 between HC(A) and HC(B) looked an easy win for HC(A) but within minutes of starting Colin Trower's boat went out of control and HC(B) were able to take full advantage of Colin's misfortune to secure their only win of the day with 2nd, 3rd and 5th places.
By the end of the penultimate race HC(A) and TR(A) each had 4 wins and 1 loss so the Championship would be decided by the outcome of the last race of the day which, appropriately, was between these two top teams. Although TR(A) Peter Popham, Derrick Beere and Stan Nutchey put up a good fight the superior speed of Dennis Moss' and Colin Trower's boats proved decisive and HC(A) were the worthy winners.
