CTC Guide to
Cycling with a Group

With over 60 members Uxbridge Loiterers is one of the larger cycling clubs in West London.

Our aim is to enjoy cycling all the year round in beautiful countryside with pleasant company, good food and drink.

Loiterers meeting in front of Uxbridge StationThe Loiterers have rides every Wednesday and Sunday starting at 10.00 am from the Market Square in front of Uxbridge Underground Station.  Occasionally times may vary depending on destination.

Loiterers rides explore the Thames Valley and Chiltern Hills using minor roads and well surfaced bridleways.  All rides are led by an experienced member of the club and have a "back marker" to assist if anyone has a problem.

Most people complete the whole ride, returning to Uxbridge between 4.00 and 5.00 pm.  Others join or leave at tea breaks or lunch depending on commitments.

Wednesday Rides
There are three rides on Wednesdays.

The Standard ride is aimed at the moderate cyclist with the emphasis on easy pedalling at a leisurely pace through the local countryside.  The destination is decided on the day by the club member leading the ride.  Tea breaks (garden centres, cafes, etc.) and lunch stops (pub or bring sandwiches) are carefully chosen to ensure plenty of time for relaxing and socialising.  Will you be able to keep up?  Yes, the aim is to go at the pace of the slower rider.  Distances covered depend on the season, 20-30 miles in the Winter and 25-35 miles in the Summer.

The Short ride is similar to the Standard ride but with cycling distance limited to a maximum of 20 miles. This ride will suit members who are returning to cycling or wish to be back in Uxbridge by mid-afternoon.

The Longer ride is aimed at the more experienced rider who enjoys the challenge of greater distances.  Destinations and tea stops are usually decided on the day.  Many of the riders in this group have progressed from the standard ride. Distances cycled can vary between 35 and 50 miles depending on terrain and season.

Sunday Rides
These rides are similar to the standard Wednesday ride but also include members from the faster group.  Tea or brunch stops may be decided in advance with other stops decided on the day.

Other Rides
In order to explore new places the club organises car/train assisted day rides, an annual holiday and overnights using Youth Hostels.

Picnic lunch in Windsor Great ParkUxbridge Loiterers have occasional social evenings and we join with West Middlesex members at their Club Night (usually a slide show) every third Friday of the month throughout the winter.  The location is the Scouts Hut, Ickenham, Hillingdon. (opposite Ickenham Library car park) just a few minutes walk from Ickenham Underground Station.
